The Fight for Fathers

As Washingtonians from all across the state fight for parental rights, school curriculum transparency, and their economic futures, Father’s Day takes on an especially important meaning.

Every father looks to their child and, quite literally, sees himself in them. From their noses, and eyes; to the way they say syrup and what they find funny. They see half a lifetime of choices leading up to their existence, and half a lifetime of choices yet to make for them. They see the sweat, tears, and time they have given to make a better life for them. And, they see the joy, laughter, and happiness these little humans have brought into their lives.

Now… the government wants to step in between this love, these lives, these moments, and tear them to pieces. They want to tell a father, you have no place here, and no say in what happens to the person you love the most. Stand aside, as people who have no real vested interest in the betterment of who your child is, make the decisions about their life that should only be left up to you.

I know some people will say that not every father is a good man, that not every father has love in his heart, and not every father makes the best decisions for his children. And, that is true. But, asking your child to wait a while before making permanent biological and psychological decisions is not wrong. Asking your child to explore other thoughts and options before jumping to make a decision is not wrong. Asking your child to look at reality before they hurt themselves is not wrong. Asking teachers why they are more interested in who your child has sex with, than they are about whether or not your child can read is not wrong. Asking why teachers are creating political activists instead of self sufficient people is not wrong. Asking schools why “racial equity” involves degrading, silencing, hurting, and targeting certain races of children is not wrong. These are not the dangerous fathers with no love in their hearts. These are good men who want the best for, not just their children, but all children.

So, to all of the fathers fighting every day to put food on the table, to bring love into your homes, to protect your children, and to make the world a better place… thank you. We see you. We hear you. And, we will fight along side you every step of the way.

If you’re a father that sees what’s going on and wants to do more, let’s have a conversation about how you can do that. Because the child you helped bring into this world matters to us, and so do you.
